Let People Know They Under Surveillance: Videotaping/Recording

Security and technology are good friends to owners and REALTORS.

The South Carolina Association offices are protected by alarm systems and video cameras. Signs are posted the videotaping is occurring as a deterrent to crime.

Buyer agents should educate buyers that sellers may have security systems on premises that might record their statements. So as in a poker game, don’t tip your hand for contract negotiations. Do not make statements about how much you like the property, your motivation for buying, your top end price, etc.

Listing agent should educate sellers to disclose the audio/visual systems as deterrence to crime and to head off upset buyers that might report the taping to law enforcement or file a lawsuit.

Security systems should not tape in bathrooms (privacy, voyeur sex crimes).

Sellers should remove valuables, drugs, weapons, sentimental items, and identity theft type information from listings prior to showings.
